A Great Event in Siler City – Chatham Literacy

On September 9, 2017, seventy people came together to improve literacy in Chatham County, and had a great time doing it. They attended the Fall for Literacy Luncheon at the Siler City Country Club and enjoyed a delicious lunch and an entertaining program of speakers.

Adult learner Alma Tovar spoke movingly about what further education has meant to her. Her tutor, Linda Nalty, added that the benefits of tutoring go both ways. For every Chatham Literacy student, two lives are changed.

Cecilia Budd Grimes, a Southern born and bred lady, took the audience on a fun romp through Southern recipes and Southern rules. Her talk was a home run. She drew much laughter while sharing about all things Southern. All attendees received a free copy of Ms. Grimes’s book What It Means to Have a Southern Wedding. And one person at each table won an additional door prize.

The venue was fantastic. A special thanks to Siler City Country club for providing the space for free. Also thanks to Wanda Constantino, the lead event coordinator, and to The Real Housewives of Chatham County who helped the Chatham Literacy Events Committee to get all of the preparations done from making and setting up the Southern-specific centerpieces to making and serving that quintessential Southern dish: deviled eggs. Attention to every small detail was not lost on this great group of volunteers.

All proceeds from the luncheon directly fund Chatham Literacy’s free instruction for adult learners. This is an important annual fundraising and awareness raising event for Chatham Literacy. Chatham Literacy provides free tutoring to adults in reading, writing, English for Speakers of Other Languages, workforce soft skills, as well as citizenship and GED preparation.
