Vicki Newell

Executive Director

Vicki Newell has been executive director of Chatham County Literacy Council since 2011 and was tutor coordinator for two years before that. While staying home for six years to raise her three sons, she volunteered on the boards of Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services and the PTA of Pittsboro Elementary School. Vicki worked for six years as the health specialist with the Smart Start Initiative at the state and Chatham County levels. Vicki has a master’s degree in health communication from Johns Hopkins University. She was in the Peace Corps and speaks French and Tshiluba. You can reach her at 919-542-6424 or at

Loyda Estrada

Student Coordinator

Loyda Estrada got involved with Chatham Literacy in 2013 as a volunteer interpreter for the citizenship class. She became a citizen the next year, attended Chatham Literacy’s Tutor Training program, and now helps teach the citizenship class. Before becoming Chatham Literacy’s student coordinator in 2015, Loyda worked for six years at a pediatrician’s office in Siler City. She also has worked in human resources. She has been active in the community and in her church for several years. Loyda has lived in Siler City since 1995 with her husband, son, and daughter. Desiree Cho

Volunteer Coordinator

Desiree Cho was an educator for more than a dozen years before joining Chatham Literacy in 2016, working in a variety of settings from the Midwest to New England to the South. She also has taught numerous ages and levels from kindergarten to pre-service teachers in college. She earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education and English literature from Concordia College in Minnesota, the state where she grew up. She also has graduate degrees in applied educational research methods and in curriculum and instruction from Louisiana State University. She is particularly interested in diversity in education and how education operates in varying systems in society. Denise Lynch


Denise Lynch is the bookkeeper for Chatham Literacy. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She has worked in the non-profit sector since 2004. Her knowledge of the QuickBooks software has enabled Chatham Literacy to improve and streamline their accounting operations. Denise has worked with Chatham Literacy since 2012….
