Why Sponsor Chatham Literacy?
Chatham County is full of contrasts. While we have many middle-class and affluent households, about one in four of our children lives below the poverty level.
Today, 13.1% of adults over the age of 25 years old do not have a high school degree and that figure increases to 33% in and around Siler City. The consequences are enormous for these adults and their families. Of those without a degree, about 50% are not in the workforce (per 2016 census).
That is where we come in. Chatham Literacy transforms lives in the following three areas:
- Traditional Literacy in which we help adults to improve their basic education such as reading, writing, and math; to prepare for the GED or high school diploma; to enroll in a vocational degree; or to ready themselves for training opportunities to advance their work.
- Civics and Language Literacy in which we teach English language learners how to speak, read and write, and understand English; we help prepare adults for the citizenship exam.
- Life Skills Literacy in which we prepare adults for expectations and norms in today’s workplace; we do that by offering workforce soft skills training, computer literacy and financial literacy.
We match the tutors and students based on their skills and interests. Students and tutors meet in safe, carefully chosen conference rooms and facilities in libraries, community colleges, churches, and retirement communities.
Chatham Literacy is an established, growing organization that is providing much needed free and individualized adult literacy services within Chatham County. Tutoring is helping to build confidence and pride in our adult learners…not only for themselves but also for their community.
How can you help?
Without partners like you, we cannot accomplish this mission. Chatham Literacy is entirely dependent on grants, donations, public events and business sponsorship. We have two fundraisers in 2019: one in the spring and one in the fall. All proceeds fund Chatham Literacy’s free one-on-one and small-group instruction.
As a business, you can help sponsor either our Spring or Fall fundraising events (see the Business Sponsorship form below). We need your financial business sponsorship or individual donation to sustain, expand, and enhance our services.
If you have time to volunteer, we would love to have you join our family. We have a variety of projects where we need help and support, and we always need tutors.
