Who can take Chatham Literacy classes?
You are eligible for our services if you are an adult who lives or works in Chatham County and you need to improve your educational or English skills in order to reach your goals. We also offer classes for adults who want to prepare for the citizenship or high school equivalency tests. We’ve had students from their 20s to their 80s, from all different backgrounds.
What classes are offered?
We offer instruction in reading, writing, basic math, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), high school equivalency preparation, citizenship preparation, computer literacy, and “soft skills” training on workplace expectations. Students meet in small classes or one-on-one with a tutor, depending on the subject and location.
How much does tutoring cost?
Nothing. We provide tutoring, textbooks, workbooks, and other study materials at no charge.
How can I sign up?
It’s easy. Contact our student coordinator, Leslie Ocampo, at 919-742-0578 or at leslie@chathamliteracy.org to schedule an interview so that we can learn about you and you can take a quick test. Don’t worry, the test isn’t about passing or failing – it just tells us your skills level so that we know where to start. We also will want you to tell us about your goals and about when and where you can take classes.
How much time will I need to spend on my studies?
To make good progress, you’ll need to commit to at least one tutoring session or class per week. Each will last 1 to 2 hours. You also should plan to spend some time each day on homework and outside reading.
Where would I go to take classes?
We offer group classes mornings, afternoons, and evenings. If you want to work one-on-one with a tutor, the two of you will work out times and places that are convenient for both of you.
Who are the tutors?
Our tutors are volunteers. Many are retired and have college degrees. They come from a variety of backgrounds – from teachers to engineers to doctors, and everything in between. All have been trained to help you meet your short-term and long-term learning goals.
How will you pick a tutor for me?
Some tutors have a knack for teaching ESL, or reading, or math. Some have experience with a wide range of students. We’ll match you based on your needs and the tutor’s skills and interests. If we don’t already have the right tutor for you, we’ll try hard to recruit one who can help you meet your goals.
